Psalm 27:13-14. O! Had I not believed that I shall see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord. Be strong; let your heart take courage. Wait for the Lord.
How many times–no!–for how many years do we stagger under the Night. Darkness is heavy. We cannot always see the goodness of the Lord. We need fuel to kindle and warm the waiting hours, meanwhile.
How we walk in the meanwhile–that is what Christian living is really about. Strength and courage are commanded, and God’s commands must never be spiritualized. The “Christian T-shirt” culture will never exorcise the Night. Only waiting makes it to the Dawn.
This is why David doubles-down on the command to wait. He’s been through the Night, and however he may have lived in the meanwhile, he knows now that strength and courage are the only real options. He waited to look upon the goodness of God because he knew already by faith that God is good.
Romans 8:24-25. For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees [already]? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.
